Do You Need to Coordinate Your Benefits?

September 27, 2016 By Heather Horsey

Two insurance plans? Learn how to coordinate them to maximize your benefits.

Does your family have more than one dental plan? Do you have 2 jobs that both provide dental benefits? Or are you insured by a second dental plan?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then Delta Dental will coordinate your benefits when you file a claim for dental services. In other words, your 2 plans need to work hand in hand so you get the most out of your dental benefits.

Coordination of benefits, or COB, is a method of integrating multiple benefits plans for one person. It ensures that plans do not duplicate or make unnecessary payments. One plan becomes your primary plan—paying your claims first—while the second plan then pays the remaining balance.

When both your plans have COB provisions, the plan in which you’re enrolled as the main policyholder is primary. The plan in which you’re enrolled as a dependent serves as the secondary.

To view detailed information about coordination of benefits, sign in and review your Dental Benefit Handbook.
