With a new administration, a change in coverage could become a reality. We’re already fighting for regular health care coverage, but dental coverage is (literally) like pulling teeth. More about the ACA, dental coverage and what could happen in the future:
The Situation
49 million Americans live in areas where there is a shortage of dental professionals and/or dental care. Even if Medicaid covers low-income families, dental coverage isn’t included. 1/3 of white children go without dental care, and nearly 1/2 of minorities are lacking care.
In 2010, Obama enacted the Affordable Care Act, AKA Obamacare. This program insured millions of Americans through new markets. The law allowed 20 million additional people to get health coverage. Under the ACA, dental coverage was optional for adults, but required for children. Carriers who are part of the Health Exchange must offer pediatric dental benefits for children 18 and under.
Since Trump became President, Republican lawmakers have been extremely vocal about their plan to repeal Obamacare.
Dental Coverage in the Trump Administration
These attempts have been unsuccessful. Most recently, the Graham-Cassidy act aimed to repeal the ACA, but failed on September 26, 2017. This marks the fourth failed attempt to repeal Obamacare.
What Could Happen if the ACA is Repealed?
It depends on what the replacement for the ACA is. Things will obviously be more problematic if there isn’t one. Regardless of what the replacement is, 18 million people would lose health insurance, and premiums would increase by nearly 25%.
While the future of health coverage is uncertain, there is one thing you can do now. Tooth decay is preventable, so take care of your pearly whites. Your teeth affect more than your smile—they impact your overall health too.
